Twin Peaks returns

Twin Peaks is back!

The classic ABC show is making a return to Showtime in 2016 with nine new episodes. Creators David Lynch and Mark Frost are working away on the scripts with all episodes set to air on the 25th anniversary of the show’s demise after two seasons on ABC in 1990 and 1991.

The story will be set in the present day, and will continue storylines that featured in the second season. Mark Frost was quick to point out that this will not be a remake or a reboot, but will follow original characters and what they've been up to since we saw them last.

Apparently the passage of 25 years will be a major element in the plot, but Mark Frost refused to give any other details away to Variety.com

“For those followers of the show who felt bereft when the show ended where it did all those years ago are going to like where it goes from here,” Frost said. “And we hope that a lot of people who haven’t been to Twin Peaks yet are going to be equally interested in where the story goes from where we left off.”

Twin Peaks was seen as a series ahead of its time, with David Lynch showing a different approach to telling murder mysteries in a fictional small town in Washington, USA. At the time the series ended, Lynch was "hot stuff" in the Hollywood scene, and remains one of the most famous directors in LA. The TV series became a cult classic after it ended and therefore was a prime candidate for revival.

Lynch and Frost have discussed returning to Twin Peaks over the years, but things got serious when they had one of their semi-regular lunches at Hollywood’s Musso and Frank Grill three years ago.

Both of them realised that “Twin Peaks” was a TV pioneer in many respects. Aspects of the show that were seen as a handicap in the ABC days are now pillars of the contempo generation of edgy cable and pay cable series.

Notes from the Sound Engineer regarding the audio & accompanying video :

Hole performing Celebrity Skin live at Don Hill's in NYC
I was hired through the venue to record this show (including many others throughout that week) and was then left standing with a hard drive and an invoice no one seemed to want. Four years later I still have the files and not really any idea what to do with them. But I like to share. So here we are.
What you are hearing are just Courtney's isolated vocal and guitar mics (with the obvious bleed from the rest of the band). I've muted everything else. EDIT: There seems to be some confusion about where/what the video footage is. It's a video of the same performance. It's just not my video. I did not shoot this video. I did not edit this video together. I have merely taken my audio recording of the same performance and synced it as best I could. Their edit is sloppy which is why it drifts in and out of sync. It's not about the video, anyway. It's there for context.

To address the most obvious, inevitable question that I will be asked...this is not fake. Whether you think she's the worst or this just makes her all the more "punk rock" is for you to decide. I'm merely presenting the facts as they are. Make of them what you will.

Puppy-sized spider shocks scientist in rainforest

WHEN scientist Piotr Naskrecki heard rustling in a rainforest, he expected to see a possum or rat.  But his curiosity turned to shock when a puppy-sized spider bristled under his flashlight.  “When I turned on the light, I couldn’t quite understand what I was seeing,” Naskrecki, an entomologist and photographer at Harvard University’s Museum of Comparative Zoology, told Live Science.

The South American Goliath birdeater is the world’s largest spider, with a leg span of up to 30 centimetres (or the size of “a child’s forearm”) and weighing more than 170 grams.

“Its feet have hardened tips and claws that produce a very distinct, clicking sound, not unlike that of a horse’s hoofs hitting the ground,” Naskrecki wrote on his blog.

Naskrecki, who spotted the colossal creature in a South American rainforest in 2012, saw it rub its hind legs against its abdomen, sending out hairs with tiny barbs on them. He said the barbs are “extremely painful and itchy”.

The highly venomous arachnid also has five-centimetre fangs.  But in good news, even if it bites you, “a chicken can probably do more damage,” Naskrecki said.

Naskrecki caught the female and took her back to his lab to study. Hopefully it hasn’t escaped.

Renée Zellweger looks unrecognizable

Once one of Hollywood’s most successful leading ladies, Renée Zellweger has shied away from the limelight in recent years but made a rare public appearance on Monday night.

The “Bridget Jones’ Diary” star, 45, attended Elle’s Women in Hollywood Awards at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles sporting a decidedly different look.
Zellweger was accompanied to the 21st edition of the annual event by boyfriend Doyle Bramhall II, whom she’s been dating since 2012.

While the actress headlined a number of hit movies during the mid-’90s and the aughts, she hasn’t been seen on the silver screen since 2010’s “My Own Love Song.”
That will change next year, though, when she stars alongside Keanu Reeves in the legal thriller “The Whole Truth.”

A rep for the actress didn’t immediately return a request for comment.

Sister Cristina’s “Like A Virgin” Video — Nun Won The Voice In Italy!

{youtube}r0e8Uve7cJU{/youtube}

Sister Cristina, the nun whose incredible performances led to her victory on the Italian version of “The Voice” over the summer, has released an official music video for “Like A Virgin,” the Madonna classic.

“I chose ‘Like a Virgin’ because I wanted it to bear witness to God’s power to move all things!” explained Cristina in a statement. “I see it as GOD’S TOUCH, when he called me to a new life, giving me back the purity and dignity of being his Daughter and being Loved by Him. And that’s the way it will be till the end of time!”
(From what we can recall, that was not Madonna’s primary message with the song upon its original release in 1984.)

The 26-year-old nun told the Italian newspaper Avvenire, “I chose it with no intention to provoke or scandalize. Read the text, without being influenced by previous interpretations, you discover that it is a song about the power of love to renew people, to rescue them from their past.”

Cristina’s version of “Like A Virgin” comes from her self-titled debut album, which includes two original songs and 10 cover tracks, including “Fix You” by Coldplay and the Cyndi Lauper tune “True Colors.” It comes out on November 11.

Ronnie Wood cuddled up to a koala in yesterday. The Rolling Stones legend, 67, took to his Twitter account to post a photograph of him holding the cute fluffy creature, named Eddie, at Adelaide Zoo, before he and his band mates took to the stage to perform at the Adelaide Oval stadium tonight.

Alongside the snap of the marsupial, Ronnie wrote: "Me with my pal Eddie #Australia #Adelaide (sic)."

However, Eddie wasn't the only animal Ronnie was able to get up close and personal with at the wildlife centre as he also held a Pygmy Blue-tongue Lizard.

He wrote next to the photo of him and the little reptile: "Met an endangered Pygmy Bluetongue Lizard today. Only found in grasslands in South Australia #Tiliquaadelaidensis (sic)."

Ronnie touched down in Australia on October 15, before being joined by his band mates Sir Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Charlie Watts last Saturday, in time for their first gig in front of 50,000 fans in Adelaide, South Australia, tonight.

The group will now travel to Western Australia for their two concerts in Perth, then to Melbourne, before making their way to Sydney in New South Wales and Brisbane in Queensland at the beginning of November.

They will then round up their gigs in Auckland in New Zealand on November 22.

The rockers were forced to postpone the Australian leg of their tour '14 On Fire' in March after Sir Mick's longterm partner L'Wren Scott tragically killed herself.

Is Jess Mauboy’s Video That Bad?

Jessica Mauboy’s new video has divided opinion — is it a Hot Jess or a Hot Mess?

Mauboy dropped the clip for her top five hit Can I Get a Moment.

{youtube}vW73YxRaLfg{/youtube}

In the ruthless world of instant online experts some have already hailed the video as sexy while others say it “looks like it cost $2.”

The video’s You Tube page is a barometer of mixed opinions.

Malinov24 says “I loved the song but I honestly expected more out of the video. All her outfits were not very flattering of her figure. This to me is her worst video.”

Found Can I Get A Moment? by Jessica Mauboy. Good song but the video looks like it cost $2 :(  http://shz.am/t154409752

12:58 PM - 29 Oct 2014

The Brown Lamb noted “Why does Jess always have the best songs but worst music videos :/”

Cacticris added “Yeah there’s something off about this video. The song is great though.”

But Damian Nicholas of website Auspop hailed the video, stating: “There’s more to the clip than just her polished delivery out front of the band. There’s some serious making love to the camera here, suggesting to us that Jess is growing increasingly comfortable in her sexuality and her standing as one of Australia’s premier pop talents.”

I am actually kind of speechless that Sony put out that Jessica Mauboy video like that. The girl deserves so much better!

12:55 PM - 29 Oct 2014

Mike Wass of American website Idolator compared the video to Beyonce’s no-frills performance based clip for Love on Top, calling the video “cute but familiar.”

“Can I Get A Moment? obviously draws inspiration from Beyonce’s Love On Top visual, which was a cute reworking of New Edition’s If It Isn’t Love clip. It’s hardly surprising given Jessica’s love for all things Queen Bey and the format fits the song perfectly.”

.@JessicaMauboy's "Can I Get A Moment?" video is a nod to @Beyonce's "Love On Top": http://idola.to/1sBSR3t

12:20 PM - 29 Oct 2014

Adelaide journalist Matt Gilbertson noted “The song is as good as Beyonce ... the video is a little Michelle (Williams) :(“

The video was filmed at Crown casino in Melbourne and was directed by Stu Gosling, whose CV includes Ronan Keating, Westlife, Girls Aloud and Las Ketchup.

Last year Mauboy’s record label Sony axed X Factor winner Dami Im’s clip for Alive after fans said it looked cheap and awkward. Her mentor Dannii Minogue directed a replacement version.

Australian video budgets have dropped in the past decade, around the same time as Channel 10 axed Video Hits, the last outlet for pop videos to get played in full on commercial TV.

The only remaining video-based programs are Rage, which plays Top 40 videos in the wee hours, and The Loop, which airs at 9am Saturdays on Ten’s digital network Eleven, and effectively replaced Video Hits.

Ten now repeat their morning show Studio 10 and episodes of Dr Phil on a Saturday morning.

Aside from You Tube, the only other exposure for music videos in Australia is on cable TV.

The song has continued Mauboy’s impressive run in the chart — making her the most successful Australian Idol export behind Guy Sebastian.

Debuting in the ARIA chart at No. 5 this week, Can I Get a Moment? became Mauboy’s eighth Top 10 single, her fifth top five single and her third top 10 debut.

The song, written by American A-list producer Babyface, will appear on a reissue of Mauboy’s album Beautiful, which is nominated for Album of the Year at this year’s ARIA Awards.

Grant a dying father his final wish – reunite him with his long-lost son

With a prognosis of no more than 3 months to live, Abdi's last dying wish is to set his eyes upon his long-lost son Saacid and say goodbye. The last time Abdi and his wife Fatuma saw their son was 23 years ago when Saacid was just 9 years old. They lost one another while fleeing war torn Somalia.

In 2007, the family were miraculously reconnected via telephone when the Red Cross found Saacid living in the world's largest refugee camp in Kenya. Abdi and Fatuma applied for a last remaining relative visa for Saacid and have been waiting in line patiently for four years. Abdi and Fatuma have done all the right things, but time is running out. We plead with you to expedite Saacid's visa so that a dying father may see and know his son.

Greg & Ilaria spoke to opposition leader Delia Lawrie about the case and she is putting pressure on the relevant departments.

GONE VIRAL: ASMR therapy: Is This The Weirdest YouTube Craze?!

$
0
0

Millions are tuning into YouTube to watch ‘artists’ gently whisper into their webcams while either performing completely mundane tasks like playing with a hair brush, or conducting ‘fantasy role plays’ in the latest online therapy trend that claims to de-stress, solve sleep issues, and even treat depression and post traumatic stress disorder.

{youtube}RVpfHgC3ye0{/youtube}

It’s called Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response therapy and if you don’t “experience” it, then it’s as boring as it sounds.

‘The Whispering Mum’, as ASMR therapist Lauren Ostrowski Fenton is known, explained to news.com.au that ASMR isn’t effective for everyone, but for those who feel it, it’s magic.

Ms Ostrowski Fenton, a career therapist who has just completed her masters in counselling, admits she was sceptical herself when she heard of ASMR.

“I thought it was weird when I first came across it because it’s so alternative,” she tells news.com.au.

“I thought, ‘Why is that person whispering?’. It was weird. But after I experienced it properly I thought, ‘I like the way they’re whispering’, then I really liked it, and after a while I made the decision to do it myself.”

5863596-16x9-340x191

Since jumping in to ASMR and starting her own YouTube channel, the Whispering Mum has gained millions of followers, joining the ranks of US artist ‘Maria’, whose videos can garner more than 10 million views.

Believers in ASMR, Ms Fenton explains, experience a release of chemicals brought on by the calming tones.

“Whether its ceratonin, melatonin or OxyContin, it has an effect on people — not everyone — that takes a person back to a childhood memory that’s comforting,” she says.

“If your mother tapped her fingers, brushed your hair, looked into your eyes, those are communication symbols that elicit a response, and when someone has that sensation they fall asleep very quickly.”

As well as assisting with sleep, Ms Fenton says her videos and one-one-one sessions in which she “just listens” to people, either live or recorded, or does “a number of role plays where I’m a personal trainer, a life coach or a counsellor”, also helps with more serious issues.

“I get people who say it’s relieved their depressions, they’ve decided not to kill themselves ... It helps a lot with PTSD,” she says.

Ms Fenton and others who practice ASMR realise there’s no scientific study in the area that has decided whether it works or is suitable to treat these conditions.

In the psychology world, this has also been acknowledged, with many vocal members declaring ASMR “a load of crap”.

“It’s not listed in evidence-based therapies by any national bodies, it seems like something someone dreamt up to make a quick buck,” says clinical psychologist Bob Montgomery.

Dr Montgomery says that he’s wary of new treatments like ASMR, saying not only can they be ineffective, but potentially also damaging.

“What we have to do when people come to us after going through experimental treatments they believe can help them, is undo that damage. It’s not just useless, it makes them think there’s something terribly wrong with them,” he said.

“It’s fine if all you want to do is relax temporarily, but it’s not gong to have any lasting effects.”

Dr Montgomery recommended those seeking treatment for depression, PTSD, or any sleep disorders see a GP and get a referral.

Ms Fenton says ASMR is not supposed to be a magic solution to any of these issues.

“It’s not a miracle — it’s like a massage,” she says.

“But it’s not something small, it’s massive. As far as I know there’s no study being done at the moment. I don’t believe there’s any real research to anything that’s been done.”

Yes, we've seen some crazy stuff come from her before, but this time Kim has bared her WHOLE behind in the glamour-esque photograph that gives Marilyn/Tiffany’s feels. “For our winter issue, we gave ourselves one assignment: Break The Internet.

There is no other person that we can think of who is up to the task than one Kim Kardashian West,” ‘Paper’ said in a statement, “A pop culture fascination able to generation headlines just by leaving her house, Kim is what makes the web tick.”

The shot was taken by the legendary photog Jean-Paul Goude, who was asked specifically to recreate his ‘Champagne Incident’ photo as well as the half-naked cover. Kim described working with Jean-Paul as an “honour.”

Kim gloated about the shot on her Twitter and Instagram, making fun of herself and having a laugh in the process: Kim Kardashian West ? @KimKardashian Follow And they say I didn't have a talent...try balancing a champagne glass on your ass LOL #BreakTheInternet #PaperMagazine Not everyone is celebrating this genius marketing campaign… ‘Glee’s Naya Rivera went out of her way to comment on Kim’s Instagram and gave her thoughts in a short-but-provoking message!
