In the histroy of Australian Rules Football, today (Wednesday 12th October 2016) is very significant. For the first time ever a draft will be held this afternoon to choose 145 player to populate the inugural AFL's Women's League. Eight teams will comprimise the first ever women's league playing list's selecting the nation's best players from a nomination pool of some 1,300.
The AFL recently found $200 million to purchase Etihad Stadium five days ago yet they can't find the cash to offer the women's players minimum deals of anything more than $5,000 with no health insurance. A social media campaign was launched today in getting people to take their boots off to urge the AFL management to come to the table with a more satisfactory pay offer.
Interesting times lie ahead, on and off the field, in the AFL's women's league infancy.
Six Territory female footballers have been picked to play in the first Adelaide Crows Women's team in 2017.
The draftees join fellow Territorians Angela Foley and Jasmine Anderson in the side to represent the joint-venture by AFLNT and the Adelaide Crows.
Yesterday Sally Riley, Abbey Holmes, Heather Anderson, Sophie Armistead, Tayla Thorn and Stevie-Lee Thompson were made aware of their selection during the AFLW draft in Melbourne.
Anderson, a 22 year old, quick and tenacious defender from Waratah was the 10th pick overall, an honour richly deserved, following on her 2011 and 2010 selection into the All Australian Under 18 team.
Tracy Village co-captain Sally Riley, who was a finalist in the 2016 AFL Football Woman of the Year was identified for being a hard-working utility who prides herself on having clean hands in and around the contest.
Talented midfielder from the Wanderers, Armistead received great reward for her resilience shown over the past 11 months as she works to return from a torn meniscus injury. She was awarded the NTFL Women's Rising Star Award for season 2014/15.
The 2016 NT Yought Girls joint-captain, Thorn is an upcoming talent from St Mary's and represents the future of football in the Territory. She was a member of the NT Indigenous Youth Girls representative that won National Championships from 2013-15.
Holmes, a four-time premiership winner with Waratah and the four-time NTFL leading goalkicker will join the Club she has supported her entire life. Known for her football prowess, he has also represented South Australia and Australia at junior-level netball and SA and the NT at senior-level netball.
Rounding out the AFLNT draftees, Thompson is a recent convert to AFL football having joined the Wanderers in season 2015/16 and comes with a successful touch rugby background. Her pace and agility will be welcome assets to the Crows outfit.
We congratulate all draftees and are excited for the upcoming inaugural women's football competition. C'mon the Crows!!
Australia has a new surfing champion. 22 year old Tyler Wright who took the championship after her second placing at the Roxy Pro France today (13/10/16).
Tyler Wright's only rival for the title was American Courtney Conlogue who fell out of the tournament in the semi-final, meaning Wright had a unassailable lead in the world rankings with one event in the season remaining.

If you're anything like me, avocado features daily in my life. It goes with just about everything.
But artist Boris Toledo from Chile likes to embrace the good old avocado differently. Rather than just smashing it on a piece of toast, he creates realistic portraits of celebrities and cartoon characters.
The first time he attempted one of the works, it took him about six hours ... that's a long time to wait for breakfast!

'Selfie' is an Aussie invention. The first recorded use of the world 'selfie' seems to be a drunk Aussie at a mate's 21st, who smashed his face and posted the photo online.

He's been bitten by an Alligator and stung by a cow killer. Now Coyote Peterson is taking a sting from the Tarantula Hawk. Not only is this the largest species of wasp in the United States but it eats Tarantula's for lunch. Needless to say he immediately regretted his decision.
