What a day for 13yrs old Brock Dunn and his 7 yr old brother Jake from Humpty Doo. They were winners of Mix 1049’s Back To School In A Chopper competition. The boys were picked up early Monday morning by Mix 1049’s Ilaria in the Darwin People Movers van and escorted to Marlow Lagoon where the chopper from Outback Float Plane Adventures was waiting. Pilot Matt Wright gave the boys a run through of the safety instructions before setting off on a flight around Darwin and surrounds before landing at Sattler Christian College in Bees Creek at around 8.30am.

Thanks to all who helped make this a day one to remember for the Dunn boys from Humpty Doo. Let’s hope we can do it again soon.  - Greg & Ilaria Mix1049 Breakfast

merrepen

The Daly River community (Nauiyu), 240 kilometres south-west of Darwin, celebrates the 27th Merrepen Arts and Culture Festival from Friday 30 May to Sunday 1 June, with a massive cultural weekend of traditional and contemporary performance, colourful designs, fashion and fabrics, art sale, exhibitions, workshops, demonstrations, music from Top End bands, tasty camp fire bush tucker and a three day Sports Carnival. No permit is required to visit the community.

This year’s highlight is the premiere of a mesmerising and multi-layered fashion and cultural production, Ngan’giwetimbi Dememarrgu – Old Stories New Ways, which connects generations of ancestral stories to the Nauiyu artists and their world today. This magical experience begins at 7pm shining the spotlight on the history, strength and creativity of this thriving community and how they have incorporated ancient and modern techniques into their art, textiles and designs.

Nauiyu is easily accessibly on sealed road 240 kms south west of Darwin. Drive to Adelaide River on the Stuart Highway, turn right on to Dorat Road, and after 30 kms turn right again onto Daly River Road. The festival will be signposted. There are a number of tourist parks throughout the area offering a variety of accommodation options, best to book early. There is no camping available in the community.

In May and June, the days are warm and sunny and the nights can be very cool. You will need to bring appropriate clothing such as light clothes, hats and sun protection for the day, warm clothing for the evenings. You should also bring medicines, insect repellent and drinking water. Food and fuel supplies are limited within the community.

Merrepen Arts Festival has been a popular and successful Territory iconic event for 27 years. With the recent launch of the new fabric range it has become even more sought after. Jessica Mauboy performs at EUROVISION

{youtube}tUsJi8nKsj0{/youtube}

Jessica Mauboy has been chosen by SBS to perform at the invitation of the European Broadcast Union in recognition of our love affair with the over-the-top annual entertainment event.

The contest organisers have become aware in recent years that Australians adore the kitsch grandeur of the performances and production which SBS has screened here for more than 30 years.

They sent out a delegation recently to meet with Mauboy, who wrote a new song with Potbelleez hit maker Ilan Kidron last week to perform in a guest spot during the second semi-final.

Jess euro

While she has yet to decide on its title, Mauboy said the up-tempo song would not only reflect her indigenous heritage but resonate with the European cultures competing.

“The song speaks of ancient dreaming but I also wanted to convey a message that whatever country you represent, you have to bring that culture to the next generation,” she said.

“Every time I listen to it I get another layer of goosebumps, so introducing it to the world is going to be so powerful.”

Her moment at Eurovision will be invaluable in launching her career there with a television audience of more than 180 million estimated to tune in. It is believed her song will also be released online immediately after the performance not only in Australia but throughout Europe. And the Darwin entertainer is hoping her visit may also lead to her first encounter with royalty. “I have a feeling I might get to meet Princess Mary which would be a moment I will never forget,” she said.

SBS hosts Julia Zemiro and Sam Pang will be helping her to negotiate the mammoth production. “I think Europeans will genuinely lose their minds when they see Jess perform. They’ll be thankful she isn’t competing that is for sure,” Zemiro said. Other Australians who have graced the Eurovision stage but as competitors representing England include Olivia Newton John (who lost to ABBA), the New Seekers and Gina G.

Mauboy will be the first solo artist from outside Europe to perform on the show. SBS has been shadowing the Sapphires star from the moment she discovered she had been chosen to represent Australia and will screen the documentary Jessica Mauboy’s Road to Eurovision on May 10 before the coverage of the second semi-final. The grand final airs on May 11.

Austria wins Eurovision 2014

The Austrian singer won the live televised pop contest by a landslide with her anthem "Rise Like a Phoneix."

An Austrian drag queen sporting a full beard has won Europe's most popular televised song competition.

Conchita Wurst, the drag persona for Austrian singer Thomas Neuwirth, looked a bit like a cross between a Bond Girl and a Monty Python sketch when she took the stage in a full length golden gown to belt out her winning tune Rise Like A Phoenix on the finals of the Eurovision Song Contest, held Saturday night in Copenhagen.

The competition is the most-watched non-sporting event on European television, with up to 170 million viewers tuning in.

Wurst generated a lot of attention, as well as controversy, ahead of the Eurovision finals, with a Russian politician calling for a boycott of the competition because of her participation. Vitaly Milonov, who was influential in passing Russia's anti-gay propaganda law, said the bearded singer, who he called the "pervert from Austria" represented "blatant propaganda of homosexuality and spiritual decay." He called for a boycott of the show.

Wurst had the last laugh though. Her power ballad - and her sultry live performance - won over the call-in voters as well as the national juries. Taking the stage, Wurst dedicated her win to "a future of peace and freedom." In a nod to the many dedicated Eurovision fans in the LGBT community, Wurst added: "we are unity and we are unstoppable."

This isn't the first time a LGBT performer has won Eurovision. In 1998, the pop title went to Dana International, a transgender singer from Israel, for the title Diva.

JAY-Z: Attacked By Solange!

Something bad went down between Jay Z and Beyonce's sister Solange in an elevator last week at the Met Gala at NYC's Standard Hotel -- and a security camera captured all the drama.

In a tape obtained by TMZ, Jay, Bey and Solange can be seen entering an elevator along with several other people, including a security guard. Within seconds of entering, someone who certainly seems to be Solange can be seen screaming at Jay and then make a violent lunge at him. The security guard tries to put her in a bear hug, but she manages to break free and throw several wild punches at Jay. The guard scoops her up again, but she still almost manages to land a kick in Jay's midsection.

Jay steps back after the initial assault and never makes a move toward Solange, though he does hold her foot briefly when she tries to kick him. Meanwhile, a woman who appears to be Beyonce watches the entire incident without intervening.

According to TMZ, after exiting the elevator, all three left the party, with Solange and Bey getting in one car and Jay getting in another.

The awkward moment came after R’n’B soul duo ZK, consisting of Zaachariah Fielding and Kristal West, performed Justin Bieber’s hit As Long As You Love Me.

The pair, who managed to get will.i.am to turn around at the last second, left the stage to hug it out with the coaches, but for some reason Fielding decided to give Kylie the cold shoulder.

Kylie can be seen in the clip, arms eagerly outstretched, only to be brushed by the contestant as he makes his way over to Ricky Martin and Joel Madden.

West and Fielding met four years ago but only recently began performing together. West is the grandaughter of Bonita Mabo, wife of land rights pioneer, Eddie Mabo. Bonita was backstage with other family members during the pair’s performance on Monday night.

Our national treasure didn’t know quite how to respond to the reaction from Fielding, so she just stood there, looking dejected.

Perhaps it’s because Kylie usually gets this kind of treatment from contestants.

KYLIE Minogue and Hugh Jackman cried tears of laughter during a hilarious radio segment in the UK.

Minogue was hosting the BBC 1 radio show and Jackman appeared as a guest to take part in the game Innuendo Bingo.

If you’ve never heard of the game before, it’s where two people sit opposite each other and fill their mouths with water.

The contestants are then played pieces of audio from other radio and TV shows that are full of innuendos and they have to try not to laugh.

Hugh Jackman failed dismally. He lost it on several occasions, saturating BBC 1 radio personality Chris Stark in the process.
