In the histroy of Australian Rules Football, today (Wednesday 12th October 2016) is very significant. For the first time ever a draft will be held this afternoon to choose 145 player to populate the inugural AFL's Women's League. Eight teams will comprimise the first ever women's league playing list's selecting the nation's best players from a nomination pool of some 1,300.
The AFL recently found $200 million to purchase Etihad Stadium five days ago yet they can't find the cash to offer the women's players minimum deals of anything more than $5,000 with no health insurance. A social media campaign was launched today in getting people to take their boots off to urge the AFL management to come to the table with a more satisfactory pay offer.
Interesting times lie ahead, on and off the field, in the AFL's women's league infancy.
