According to Boxing Association NT vice president Shauna Mounsey fighing sports have a terrible stigma which is why there are so few female competitors.
But Ms Mounsey is encouraging women to get involved in combat sports, such as boxing, to improve their overall health and fitness and self defence.
An oil and gas lawyer, Ms Mounsey has spent one and a half years living and training in fight camps in Thailand and the Phillipines and when not working coaches boxing and competes.
She joined Greg and Ali on Wake Up to talk about boxing as a viable form of self defence and how it can provide the skills needed to defend yourself.
Women interested in joining a club should contact Boxing NT Incorporated via their Facebook page.
